What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast and uses radiation. It is a tool used to diagnose breast cancer.
Who should get a mammogram?
Every woman, aged 40 years and older. Those under 40 would first start with an ultrasound examination and then follow the doctor´s instructions as ultrasound examinations use sound waves to form an image, not radiation.
Why is compression used?
Compression is created by a plastic plate that moves down onto the breast once the breast has been positioned on the machine. It is used to spread out the internal tissues compressing the breast.
What is the process when getting a mammogram?

Patient goes for
MAMMOGRAM
Step 4
Mammogram is clear
OR
Advised to go for a 6 month follow up
OR
Biopsy
Step 2
Then patient goes for
ULTRASOUND
Step 5
Biopsy booked at KSR branch
OR
GP/Gynaecologist refers patient Regional Radiologist or Radiologist
Step 3
Patient Receives
RADIOLOGIST VERBAL REPORT
Step 6
Biopsy results are discussed with the patient that can be benign or malignant. Where it is malignant patient is referred to specialist Doctor to discuss treatment options.
